Carol Williams

Carol Williams is no stranger to the Music Hall.  Indeed, she has become an audience favorite, having played here on several occasions.  Her programming is always imaginative, her technique flawless, and her conversational rapport with the audience friendly, informative, charming and unmatched.

Carol, a native of Wales, spent five years at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she specialized in organ performance as a student of David Sanger.  She also visited Paris for study with Daniel Roth, organist at the Church of Saint Sulpice, where Charles-Marie Widor was organist for sixty-four years.  Upon moving to America, she undertook postgraduate study at Yale University under the direction of Professor Thomas Murray.  She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music under Professor McNeil Robinson.

She has been named a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists, Fellow of Trinity College London, Associate of the Royal College of Music, and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.

In October 2001, Carol was appointed San Diego Civic Organist, and Artistic Director of the Spreckles Organ Society.

Along with her duties at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion, she maintains an active career as a concert organist, giving recitals throughout the world.  In February, she performed a recital on the 2003 Klais organ in Svetlanov Hall, at the International Performing Arts Center, in Moscow, Russia, the largest organ in the country.

Carol is passionate about raising the level of interest in the organ and its music among the general public.  She also appreciates the privilege she has been given to perform on some of the greatest organs in the world.

Combining these two life commitments, she has initiated "TourBus" a series of DVDs that documents the sights and sounds of famous organs, and makes them available to a wide audience.

"TourBus goes to Methuen" was produced in connection with her recital here last summer.  "Classical Organ Riff" was the programming theme of her recital and it included some very accessible, and very unusual selections.  The DVD, over an hour and a quarter in duration, includes an inside "behind the case" tour of the organ with Bruce Perry of the Andover Organ Company, the caretakers of the instrument; an extended discussion about the history of the "Great Organ" with Ed Sampson, President of the Music Hall Board of Trustees; and live video of Carol's recital as she performed "Mad Rush" by Philip Glass, "Toccata in Seven" by John Rutter, "Mozart Changes" by Zsolt Gárdonyi, "Riff-Raff" by Giles Swayne, and "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin.

This new DVD, that truly captures the consummate musicianship and charismatic personality of Carol Williams, is available at the Music Hall during events sponsored by the Board of Trustees at a price of $20.00.  It is also available by mail order at $23.00 each, including shipping by USPS First-Class Mail.
